JH's JournalsThursday's Journal: Today
the British kids came to our school! Today we did tons of writing, so there
isn't much to write. As I said we did a lot of writing. We decided that for a
picture on our section in the library we will have a map and in all the places
where Thomas Paine traveled like Boston, London etc. we will have facts under
all the places he went. Then we went to lunch. I had a Kit Kat!! We then went
to recess. When we came back we continued our writing. Finally near the end we
played 18th century games. The first one was where someone smiled then they
took the smile off their face and threw it at someone and then we continued
doing that! Then we did 18th century duck, duck goose. One person skips around
the circle with a letter. Everyone else sings a song and when they say
"dropt it" they drop it. Whoever it lands behind has to pick it up
and chase the other person back to their spot before the other one gets there.
Then it was time for the British kids to leave.
Wednesday's Journal: Today we went to the library in the morning. We got sheets of paper with Thomas Paine facts on it to jot down notes. Then eight people went upstairs for eight minutes to see a small exhibit about Thomas Paine. Then we went to the museum where we had an early lunch! We then split into two large groups. We looked at Thomas Paine jokes and talked about why and what they were made for. After that we went to two stations in are groups. The first group went to learn about the American war and minute men. In my group Jackson was the only one from our class in my group): We wrote are own mini rights of man or rights of kid as I called mine! My first complaint was that schools should not do detentions. My second one was that they should make a driving school for kids who wanted to ride motorcycles! Then we were off to learn about minute men. They were regular men who were called up about half an hour early telling them they needed help in the war. Then a kid named Timothy got to try on everything a minute man wore there was a lot cups to blankets. Then we went down stairs and we all talked about flags. Finally it was time to leave Tuesday: Today we went to four stations. The first station was objects and items used for punishment I do not want to go into the details, old fashion cooking, stay makers ,and my favorite the flint guy. I do not know what to call him! He talked a lot about flint knapping but I do not think he was a flint knapper. He showed us how they used to use flint in muskets! When you pull the trigger some flint connected to a metal piece slams down on a tray with gun powder in it. The flint makes some sparks and the gun powder is ignited firing a small, but quite heavy lead ball. After are activity's we had lunch followed by walking around Thetford where at the end we saw the statue of Thomas Pain or Thomas Paine. He added an "e" to his name when he arrived in England. Now I know I said I didn't want to go into the details on punishment, well I'll tell you one. Probably the least gruesome for minor crimes people would be stuck in something called THE CAGE!!!!!!! There was a wooden thing that you may have seen someone in one. It has a piece of wood with dips for your neck to go into and your arms then something symmetrical is put over your neck and arms so you can’t get out! This is basically that except you put your leg in. You put one leg in and the other one you use to stand. This is basically inside a cage where people can throw rotten fruit rocks and even bathroom waste! . Monday: Today at the Ancient House Museum, we got to know everyone and learned a lot about Thomas Paine and how to make a good poster board! What I found interesting was how the walls were made with wattle and daub. The walls were first woven with wattle that you may have seen used for a basket or a fence. Then they lathered daub, a mixture of hay, horse hair, and cow manure, on the walls. They pressed big wooden beams into the daub for support. |
