DL's Journals
Thursday's Journal: Today the children from Norwich Road School came to Feltwell. We worked on some ideas for our graphic panel that will go in the exhibition. A graphic panel is a poster that has bits of interesting information along with a couple pictures having to do with the topic. The graphic panel we are making has a map of where Thomas Paine went. Next to the areas that Thomas Paine has been to there will be some descriptions on what he did at each of the
places he traveled to. One graphic panel might have a map of England and then have a description of what Thomas Paine did in England. (Answer to HR question) Yes, you could be put in the stocks for stealing even a ruler. (Answer to GS question) Maybe if enough people believed the criminal was innocent.
Wednesday's Journal: Today we wrote with a quill pen and wrote our own rights of man. Some were really funny, like someone wrote that Justin Beiber should be thrown in jail! We also saw the clothes that a revolutionary minuteman would wear. A minuteman was an American militia man who could be ready to fight at a moment’s notice. It seemed weird that they could be so fast yet have so many clothes and other items to wear. We also went to the Thetford library and saw some coins that had been made by people who disagreed with Paine’s ideas. One coin had, “The End of Pain,” written on it with a picture of Thomas Paine being hanged. We learned that Paine only spelled his name Paine with an "e" a while after he was married. (Answer to HR question) The student acting as Paine would trail the rope behind wherever he went so that we could trace the rope around the "globe" to see where he had gone. (Answer to AG question) As Paine traveled around the globe, we were told about the different things he did in all those different areas. Tuesday’s Journal Today we walked around Thetford and saw the Thomas Paine statue. The statue is holding Thomas Paine’s Common Sense pamphlet upside down. The sculptor did this in order to get people to wonder why Paine is holding the book upside down, which will get them to try and learn more about Paine. We also saw the stocks in which criminals accused of minor crimes, such as stealing a loaf of bread, would be put. If people passing the people in the stocks thought that the criminals in the stocks were guilty of the crimes of which they were accused, the passer-by would throw rotten food. If people passing thought that the criminals were innocent, then passer-by would throw flower petals. Monday Journal: Today we mapped Thomas Paine’s travels using signs and some rope. We also got a little summary on him. |
